Kunak has been present at the highest summit of the United Nations on the environment. The fourth session of the Assembly took place on March 11-15 in Nairobi, Kenya, and has focused on achieving innovative solutions for the environment and sustainable development.

Kunak has participated in the presentation of the Air Quality Project in which they collaborate with the IAAF – International Athletics Federation – and the United Nations Environment Program. The Air Quality Project aims to address the issue of air pollution which contributes to 7 million deaths annually worldwide.

By creating an air quality monitoring network across 1000 athletics tracks around the world the UNEP/IAAF partnership provides first-hand opportunity to countries with limited air quality data to learn how low-cost sensors can provide evidence to improve the health of its citizens and future athletes. It also demonstrates an innovative approach to solving the air pollution problem.

Representatives from UNEP and Kunak explained how the UNEP/ IAAF Clean Air partnership supports the UN Environment’s long-term programme to build the capacity of local governments to manage air pollution in urban area.

Miguel Escribano, Business Development Manager at Kunak, showed participants at UNEA real time data from the IAAF’s air quality pilot at Stade Louis II in Monaco, Addis Ababa National Stadium in Ethiopia, Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre in Australia, and the Mexican Olympic Sports Center in Mexico, and described the collaboration between UNEP and the IAAF at the Science-Policy-Business Forum. The IAAF will soon be installing air quality devices in Asia and South America.

Air quality, sports and health

Last year 2018, Kunak was selected to participate in the project in which the IAAF and the United Nations Environment Program collaborate to address the problem of poor air quality. In particular, Kunak joined this project as a supplier of air quality monitoring equipment for installation on athletic tracks around the world (at the moment they have been installed in stadiums in Monaco, Peru, Ethiopia, Mexico, Sydney and Japan.) The alliance signed for the next five years between the IAAF and the UN Environment Program, endorsed by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, aims to install 1000 air quality equipment on athletic tracks certified by the IAAF throughout the world , that provide real-time data on air quality. The pollutants that will be measured include PM2.5 (particles), PM10, O3 and NO2, which according to research are the four main elements that have an impact on the performance of athletes.
